Like many other of the beach resorts along the Costa de la Luz, El Puerto de Santa Maria has caught the attention of the kitesurfing scene. 
In the summer it can get quite busy on the water around El Puerto de Santa Maria. But the long and wide beaches provide space for all the kitesurfers to start and land the kites and the Atlantic is certainly big enough to not bother each other on the water.
The best months for kitesurfing are between April and October. During that time, the Levante is particularly strong and it's sufficient to wear a short neoprene suit.
In generall, we recommend to visit El Puerto de Santa Maria outside the main season in order to fully enjoy the wind, waves and beach.

Windsurfing in El Puerto de Santa Maria - spots, winds and beaches

El Puerto de Santa Maria is a great spot for windsurfing in Spain. Being situated just 120km from Tarifa, the capitol of windsurfing in Europe, the conditions in El Puerto de Santa Maria are similar, but a bit less extreme.
While the cracks prefer Tarifa for its reinforced winds through the Strait of Gibraltar, beginners and intermediate windsurfers will have a better time in El Puerto de Santa Maria where the wind is less strong.

The strong eastern Levante wind may have 9 Bft. with flying water in Tarifa, but on the same day in El Puerto de Santa Maria the water is calm with around 4-5 Bft.
It is possible to windsurf in El Puerto de Santa Maria all year long, but in the summer months the beaches fill up with people and you would have to go to the less frquented beaches in the south of El Puerto de Santa Maria.
